Madeira is a pearl of an island known for its year round mild climate, semitropical gardens and stunning natural landscape. Situated in the North Atlantic some 500km from the coast of Africa the permanent spring-like climate has attracted British holiday makers for years to enjoy the traditions and culture of this Portuguese island. For golfers, the two beautiful golf courses set up in the hills with magnificent views and offering 45 holes may seem to offer a limited golf experience but this is far from the truth! The topographical features of both courses demand all your skill and attention and you will want to repeat the experience many times. Madeira offers plenty of opportunities to explore, but watch out for the roads which are often narrow, winding and precipitous and used for commercial vehicles just as much as for private cars. The locals take it all in their stride and at speeds that may seem suicidal but you soon get used to it! Madeira's coastline just has to be explored for the amazing views and natural beauty and the gardens at Palheiro should not be missed. Funchal itself is a busy town with old narrow streets trying to cope with modern traffic! It is nevertheless definitely worth a visit for its range of bars, restaurants and shops many of which can be found down the quieter cobbled streets of the old town. |
